Chapter Five
Five
Tabitha stomped into the house as the carriage took off.
“Audrey,” she called and her daughter followed behind her into her room like she was being controlled.
“Yes, mother.” She stood in front of her mother with her head lowered.
“Perhaps, do you have a mate?” Tabitha asked and before she could reply she continued. “If he is not a Lord or official you are going to reject him! I do not care if you have accepted him! You have to reject him!” she yelled and Audrey flinched.
“I–I–” Audrey stuttered and swallowed, lowering her head. “I do not have one,” she rushed her words and Tabitha scrunched her face.
She was finding it hard to understand her daughter’s words.
“I–do not have– one,” Audrey choked out when she saw the expression on her face.
“What? It’s been three years Audrey! Three years!” Tabitha yelled. “I’ve done everything to prevent that cursed thing from going to the ball just for you to have the chance to get your own mate but in the end?”
“I get a cursed daughter!” Tabitha screamed atop her voice making m Audrey flinch.
Audrey shuddered, fiddling with her fingers. She couldn’t say anything as it would only inflate Tabitha’s anger.
“Look at Cassandra ! She is already in the palace, but you?” She raked her eyes down Audrey’s body. “A good for nothing daughter I had hoped to end up not having a mate!”
“There is nothing I can do, mother. She should enj–”
“Enjoy what Audrey!? Do you want to remain here Mateless while that cursed thing is enjoying and having people at her beck and call!?” Tabitha yelled. She was raging, she couldn’t understand why her daughter was so foolish.
“And then, Alec would decide to give you to one lord with many wives and concubines! I’m sure you’ll love it, my dear daughter.” Her voice went from being high pitched to being eerily calm.
“That’s enough mother! Father would do no such thing and I’m going to find my mate! It’s not like I’m cursed or something!” It was Audrey’s turn to yell. She was fed up with having her mother control her all the time.
Turning on her heels, Audrey ran out of the room in tears.
Tabitha smirked going to sit in front of the mirror and her hand maid walked in immediately, took the brush, and began brushing her hair.
“My Lady, what are you going to do now?” Lia asked and ran her hands through Tabitha’s hair.
Tabitha sighed. “I have to do something about that lass but Audrey is not ready to be an ally,” she was looking at her reflection in the mirror. “I do have plans and I know Audrey is going to fall into my trap,” she smirked.
“I’m always with you my lady.” Lia cheered and Tabitha gave her a smile which disappeared almost immediately.
“I cannot lose to that useless thing. Not now, not ever.”
Cassy plopped on her new bed before letting out a sigh. She was tired from the long walk they had around the palace. The palace was so big but still, they were not done with the tour.
Cassy stood up and went in front of the dressing table and began to remove the heavy accessories from her body and wiped off her make up.
While she busied herself with these, her thoughts drifted to the Lady she had met earlier. The Theta’s assistant.
She was finding it hard to let go of the glare. It was still engraved in her heart. She had shot her a look which Cassy interpreted as “get- your- hands- off- my- man”. Cassy winced at the thought that was forming in her head She needed to stop doing this and confirm with someone before she concludesAll content © N/.ôvel/Dr/ama.Org.
But still, there was no need for her to confirm. It has nothing to do with her, it’s high time she accepts the fact that all mate bonds are not as glorious as it seems.
Cassy took her bath and put on her night wear before retiring to bed, her mind occupied with different thoughts.
She realized that she had not sent a message to the mansion since she settled at the palace, so she decided to send the letter the following day.
Days passed by in a flash, and Cassy did not set her eyes on Kai. Not like she was expecting them to be close but she was becoming bored of staying indoors.
Cassy woke up very early that morning feeling refreshed. She got dressed up and sat in her room, she felt too idle. She still couldn’t get used to the stress-free life.
She began to play with the makeup kits she could find there until she got bored again. She was beginning to think she woke up too early.
“Good morning, my lady,” Daryl greeted entering her room with a lady who looked younger than Cassy. She was surprised to see her up that early.
“A very good morning to you too!” Cassy replied with a smile. Finally, someone was here. She had to wait for her to show up like this almost every morning.
Daryl returned the smile before pointing at the lady beside her. “Joanna, your maid,” she introduced.
It seemed like someone had heard her silent plea for a companion.
“My lady,” Joanna dipped her head forward down to her waist.
Cassy smiled. “Rise,” She was pleased by the appearance of her new handmaid.
“Permit me to take my leave now, my lady,” Daryl curtsied and strutted out of the chamber, closing the door behind her.
Cassy collapsed on the bed with a sigh. She was not used to this life, one where she had peace of mind without having to receive insults and humiliations. She always worked till sunset at the beta’s manor, she was not used to being idle all day.
She faced Joanna who was still standing at the spot where she stood when she entered.
Cassy stared at Joanna deep in thoughts. Now that she had a companion, she needed to make her partner in crime. She knew she had to find a routine, else she was going to keep staying idle.
“Let’s head to the kitchen,” Cassy smiled at Joanna who had her eyes wide on her head.
She didn’t want to believe a lady would want to have anything to do with the kitchen. She wanted to shake her head, perhaps omegas could not just neglect their duties regardless of their positions.
“Pardon me, my lady. I do not understand quite well what you mean,”
“I am joining the servants,” she reiterated and walked past Joanna.
“My lady, perhaps you’re here to make demands,” The head cook, Livia asked, curtseying.
Cassy shook her head, going to the store. She was going to prepare lunch and dinner as breakfast had already been served.
That day, Cassy prepared lunch despite the hesitation of the cook. When they had a taste of the meal, they marveled.
Word spread fast around the palace, the Alpha’s mate was cooking for everyone.
Some of them had mixed feelings, while some detested her with most of them taking likening to her. They admired her.
She prepared dinner too and decided to join them for she was feeling bored eating alone.
Back at the beta’s manor, she ate with the servants so she was not used to it.
“My Lady,” They all stood up and bowed as she walked into them.
“Rise,” she smiled and went to sit on one of the stools.
They all stared at her, eyes wide on their heads. Cassy poured herself wine and stood, raising her cup.
“Let’s feast!” she hollered and all the servants cheered.
“Her grace, looks appealing tonight!” One of the male servants complimented and raised his cup, winking.
Cassy threw her locks over her shoulder and winked.
“Of course! I’m irresistible!” she winked back and the lad blushed, making the rest laugh. He had not expected that.
They were warming up to her and she felt very elated.
This was what she was used to. This is home.
Two men stood afar, from the gathering but close enough to see the beautiful maiden who laughed and joked with the servant, her pure laughter filled the whole place making her irresistible.
She moved with grace and exuded purity. She could easily be spotted amongst the crowd.
Ben chuckled and Kai turned, glowering at him.
“Forgive me, your majesty,” He bowed before rising. “But she was too adorable and I couldn’t stand it,”
Kai faced them again. Indeed he was right, he was going to appreciate her when she recalled something and shook his head.
“She is doing nothing but trying to play her way into everyone’s heart,” He uttered and turned to Ben. “But she can never reach mine,”
“I understand that it is because of–”
“Mention not and send her to my chamber,” He interjected and walked away before Ben could say anything else.
Ben shook his head and turned to the woman who was pouring wine for a lad who was staring at her admiringly.
He would not blame him. Who wouldn’t?
If only she was not an omega. She had everything else, at least to him
