Rebecca’s mind raced with suspicion as she watched Nicholas from her hidden spot behind the pillar. The thought of him potentially being connected to Alicia sent a chill down her spine. She took a deep breath, trying to calm herself. She needed to stay focused and not jump to conclusions.
After a few minutes, Nicholas ended the call and put his phone away. His expression was unreadable as he waited patiently in the car. Rebecca took a moment to compose herself before walking back out, her steps deliberately calm and measured.
“All set?” Nicholas asked with a smile as she approached.
“Yeah,” Rebecca replied, trying to match his smile. “Let’s get going.”
As they drove back to Nicholas’s apartment, she couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off. The phone call and Nicholas’s evasiveness gnawed at her. She needed to find out more but decided it was best to tread carefully.
Once they arrived at her apartment, Rebecca tried to push her doubts aside. They carried her suitcases inside, and she started unpacking, with Nicholas helping where he could. Despite the underlying tension, they managed to settle into a comfortable rhythm.
That night, as they sat on the couch watching another movie, Rebecca decided to broach the subject delicately. “Nic, I know I shouldn’t ask you this, and you have every right not to answer it, but-”
“Becky, what’s wrong? Just fire the questions. I don’t mind,” interrupted Nicholas.
Rebecca cleared her throat softly. “Um, about that phone call, um, are you sure it was just spam?”
Nicholas glanced at her, a flicker of something unreadable in his eyes. “Yeah, pretty sure. Why do you ask?”
Rebecca hesitated, choosing her words carefully. “I don’t know. It’s just that you’ve been acting differently, and I can’t help but worry.”
Nicholas sighed, running a hand through his hair. “I get it, Becky. Things have been strange lately, and I know it’s hard to trust after everything that’s happened. But I promise you, I’m not hiding anything from you.”

Rebecca searched his eyes, looking for any signs of deceit. All she saw was sincerity and concern. She nodded slowly, deciding to trust him for now. “Okay. I believe you.”
Nicholas smiled, relieved. “Thanks, Becky. I appreciate that.”
They continued watching the movie, but Rebecca’s mind was still restless. She knew she needed to dig deeper, but it had to be done carefully. For now, she decided to enjoy the moment and the rare sense of normalcy they were sharing.
The next day, Rebecca woke up carly, her mind still preoccupied with the mysterious phone call. She decided to reach out to Cathy, hoping her journalist instincts could help uncover more about Nicholas and his potential connections to Alicia.
“Cathy, do you have a moment?” Rebecca asked as they met for coffee at a small café. “Of course. What happened?” Cathy replied, sensing the urgency in Becky’s voice.
Rebecca took a deep breath, explaining the situation with Nicholas and the suspicious phone call. “I need to know if there’s any connection between Nicholas and Alicia. I can’t shake the feeling that something is off
Cathy listened intently, her eyes narrowing as she processed the information. “Wow! To be honest, this is somewhat unexpected. Mr. Bennett should be the one you can trust the most, but I’ll see what I can find out. It might take a little time, but I’ll get to the bottom of this.”
“Thank you, Cathy. I really appreciate it,” Rebecca said, feeling a surge of hope.
As Rebecca returned to the apartment, she felt a mix of anticipation and anxiety. She needed answers, and she hoped Cathy could provide them. In the meantime, she would continue to play her role, balancing her trust and suspicion carefully.
Time passed, and Rebecca maintained her routine with Nicholas, all the while keeping a close eye on any clues that might reveal his true intentions. They spent time together, sharing meals and having conversations, but the underlying tension never fully disappeared.
One thing that astonished Rebecca was that Harvey had stopped–contacting her. She still remembered very well that Harvey said that he would not give up, but after that day she no longer heard from him, and honestly, he was quite heartbroken.
One evening, as they were finishing dinner, Rebecca’s phone buzzed with a message
‘Becky, I found something. Meet me tomorrow at the café, same time.”

Rebecca’s heart raced as she read the message. She glanced at Nicholas, who was clearing the table, and forced a smile. “I have to meet Cathy tomorrow for some work stuff. By the way, she is my manager now.”
Nicholas nodded, seemingly unbothered. “Sure, no problem! You know what? I’m so proud of you!” He exclaimed as he caressed her head gently.
Rebecca smiled. “Thanks,” she replied casually, trying not to get affected by Nicholas‘ kind attitude.
The next day, Rebecca arrived at the café, her nerves on edge. Cathy was already there, a serious expression on her face.
“What’s up?” Rebecca asked, sitting down across from her.
Cathy leaned in, lowering her voice. “First of all, it’s not about Nicholas, because I could hardly find any connection between him and Alicia.”
Rebecca
frowned. “So why are we here?”
Cathy took a big breath. “Becky, I did some research and discovered a connection. between Alicia and Dr. Theodore. They never shared any moments, and that’s why we couldn’t find anything.”
Rebecca frowned. “Okay? So?” She demanded impatiently.
“So, I found out that they were connected by someone!” Exclaimed Cathy, clapping her hand.
Rebecca felt a cold wave of dread wash over her. “Who is it? Do I know that person?”
Cathy cleared her throat. “Just don’t be surprised, okay? Don’t be hurt, because it is the way it is.”
“Cathy, stop talking nonsense and tell me who that person is,” snapped Rebecca impatiently.
“Alright, alright! She is your ex–sister–in–law, Mia Specter.” Cathy nodded firmly, showing Rebecca that she was very confident about her discovery.
Rebecca covered her mouth in surprise; she couldn’t believe what she just heard.
