Chapter 30
Chapter 30
“I remember when I was in elementary school, I fell down the stairs because someone pushed me. At that time, you even went to check the surveillance footage with the police…” Shirley continued, speaking earnestly,
As Shirley spoke, she became more serious. Mr. Yates realized that if he continued to pretend not to remember, he might reveal more. So he followed her lead, feigning realization, “Are you talking about Cynthia?”
“Yes, yes, yes, yes!” Shirley was ecstatic.
“You’re that Cynthia?” Mr. Yates asked Cynthia standing next to Joshua, seeking confirmation of her identity. From NôvelDrama.Org.
Cynthia had not expected the two of them to be such good actors. She responded with a faint,” Mhm.”
“Cynthia, is that really you?!” Shirley was thrilled, not giving away any hints of deception. I’m Shirley, the little girl with short hair who fell into the pond, and you saved me when we were kids. Do you remember?”
“I remember.” Cynthia nodded.
How could she forget? That rascal had snuck away to pick some water plants while she was not paying attention and slipped into the pond. When Cynthia pulled her out, Shirley still clung tightly to the water plant she had picked.
Joshua glanced at her with a more scrutinizing look. “I never heard you mention before that you had a connection with the Yates family.”
“Why would I talk about something that happened ten years ago?” Cynthia retorted.
Joshua was silenced.
Shirley enthusiastically invited Cynthia. “Cynthia, come sit over here!”
Cynthia joined her, and the two of them chatted, reminiscing about the past. They spoke about the time Cynthia had defended Shirley from bullies and the time Cynthia had covered for her while she snuck in food.
“You’ve changed so much in these ten years that I almost didn’t recognize you,” Shirley said, holding Cynthia’s hand and refusing to let go, her eyes filled with nostalgia.
Seeing this, Joshua realized the truth in their shared past. Shirley, who was smitten with her older sister, wasted no time challenging Joshua, “Mr. Neal, may I ask why you and Cynthia divorced?”
“We just didn’t get along,” Joshua gave a brief answer.
Shirley turned to Cynthia. “Is that true?”
Cynthia nodded in agreement.
Shirley’s eyes flickered. She was certain Cynthia was lying.
“It’s for the best.” Shirley boldly declared, not fearing any consequences, “I have many
outstanding friends who would be great for you. They’ll be very curious about you when they hear how you protected me in the past.”
“Alright.” Cynthia knew she was just showing off her acting skills at this point.
Joshua’s brow furrowed ever so slightly at the word. It was clear he was not happy with Shirley’s statement.
“Does Ms. Yates enjoy matchmaking?” Joshua’s hostility toward Shirley was growing.
“Not really.” Shirley did not back down. “I just like finding matches for Cynthia. She’s such an outstanding person and deserves the best.”
“You don’t really know much about her. How would she know who is right for her?”
“Don’t worry, I’ll arrange for them all to meet Cynthia, and she can choose the one she likes.” Joshua did not know what to say. He felt that the conversation should not continue. He was not even divorced yet, and Shirley was already trying to introduce Cynthia to new people right in front of him. He felt that she was being a little impolite.
“Let’s discuss this after my divorce with her.” Joshua’s tone grew colder and more annoyed.” Regarding our business cooperation, I’ll have someone visit the Yates Group to discuss it personally with Chairman Yates later. I won’t trouble Miss. Yates any further today,” Joshua concluded.
“Alright,” Mr. Yates agreed, standing up to see Joshua off.
And so, their conversation came to an end.
