Chapter 15
Chapter 15
Chapter 15 Oliver read through the lines of the Doctor`s note. He could not believe what he was seeing; the doctor had confirmed that his DNA matched with that of the unborn child, that the child was his. The hospital reports were attached to the letter. He flipped through their pages and they were hundred percent the same thing as that of Arianna`s chosen hospital, if not for the different hospital names and signatures, he would have said it was a photocopy. “Oliver, I am sure there is foul play here. I told you that these middle class gold diggers would do anything to get what they want. Just give me your permission and I would file a case against them, I would charge them for fraud and deceit, then I would send them to jail!” Mr. Danielson barked. “Mr. Danielson, I would warn you one last time not to abuse my client or you would have to answer to the law.” “The law you say? In case you don’t know, people like me make the law. Worthless lawyers like you are not a threat to me at all, I have lost a few cases in my career but none of those losses was to someone as pathetic as you.” He retorted. “I am not here to exchange words with you. We had a deal, both results prove that your client is guilty of the accusation, he is responsible for the pregnancy he had denied and as stated in the contract, he has to not only apologize to my client for the wrong treatment but compensate her with the sum of fifty thousand dollars. After that, the two of them can now decide what to do with their lives but with no obligations towards each other.” He stated, as it had been written in the agreement they signed. “Wrong! I refuse to accept those conditions and neither would my client, he would not apologize, talk more of paying a dime as compensation.” Mr. Danielson retorted adamantly. “I will do it!” Oliver suddenly said, surprising everyone in the room. He had been quiet since those papers got into his hands and that left Sammy wondering what was going on in his best friends’ mind. “Oliver, what do you mean? No, you would not do it, this is what they want, and I am sure they cheated.” “These results clearly show that I am responsible for this pregnancy. I agree that I do not believe that I am responsible for the baby even till now, I have no idea how this happened but if these reports say it’s
true, then I guess it is.” He replied sadly. “No, Mr. Stark, don’t fall for their lies, we should take this matter to court and I can promise you victory. And why do you have so much trust in what the hospital reports say? You know it can be forged right?” Mr. Danielson queried. “I know that sir, but it’s not the reports that I trust blindly, it’s the doctor in charge. If there is anyone I trust in this life, it’s him. He is more than just a family doctor; he is like a brother to me, someone who can make any sacrifices to save my life. If he says that I am the father, then without doubt I am the father of the unborn child.” “Oliver, no one is worth trusting in this life, they could have bribed him,” he argued. Oliver sighed and wiped the sweat off his face with a handkerchief. “Bribe him? Look at these people, let’s say that Josh could betray me, how much do you think that these people can offer him to do so?” The lawyer scratched his head and adjusted his glasses. “You never can tell Oliver, she’s a woman after all, money is not the only way they can achieve their goals.” Oliver crumpled his face after hearing that, he couldn’t believe how narrow minded his lawyer was. “Really Mr. Danielson? She is pregnant for Christ sake, what could she possibly have to offer?” he asked sternly, now getting irritated with the lawyer`s persistence. “But Oliver…” “That’s enough, thank you so much for fighting this case for me, but I do not want to drag this any further. As stated in the contract, I am obliged to serve an apology to her with monetary compensation, so Miss Arianna McQueen, I apologize for my irrational behavior, my wrong doings and every other way I have offended or abused you. I am sorry for calling you names and for all the inconveniences I caused you. I hope you can find somewhere in your heart to forgive me.” After making the apology, Oliver pulled out his cheque booklet from his breast pocket and wrote a cheque of fifty thousand dollars. This was not going to be a significant reduction from his account balance but it was still going to be a big loss, considering the humiliation that accompanied it. He stood up and stretched the cheque slip towards Arianna who was not sitting so far away. Rosie`s face brightened up in excitement, if she had not controlled herself then she would have dragged theNôvelD(ram)a.ôrg owns this content.
slip off Oliver`s hands immediately. Arianna was quiet as a few drops of tears trailed down her eyes, she didn’t know if they were tears of joy or sadness. After a while, she sniffed back the tears, cleaned her face and stood up. “I… I don’t need your money; I think the apology would do. Goodbye,” she muttered to everyone`s astonishment and walked off, leaving the CEO`s hand hanging in the air. Rosie, who was the most puzzled amongst them, turned to Mr. Damon and he motioned that they should leave. She was extremely disappointed. She scoffed, grabbed her handbag and went after Arianna. “I think we are done here, have a nice day.” Arianna`s lawyer concluded and walked out with his head high. Even though this had an awkward ending unlike how he had expected, it was still a win for him. Oliver stood there puzzled. Did she really reject the huge sum of money? Or was she going to come back for it? He could not believe what had happened. He turned to his lawyer who still had an angry face. The disappointed lawyer sighed and mumbled a goodbye before leaving with his briefcase. He was disappointed with what had happened today. He had not only lost to a lawyer of lower status but he felt embarrassed by his client`s actions. Oliver looked at his best friend but Sammy too had no words to say, he was just as quiet and surprised as his best friend. What had happened before them was something unbelievable. Perhaps Arianna would regret making that decision in future, that money could change her entire life but she chose to let it go.
