Chapter13

Eventually, I illuminated my path.

But it was a road filled with ruggedness and pitfalls, reeking of discomfort and despair. Content (C) Nôv/elDra/ma.Org.

The remnants of affection were not enough to keep me moving forward, nor did they offer any warmth. They only made it painfully clear just how unbearable this marriage had become.

“I used to think that maybe your strong sense of morality made it difficult for you to accept loving anyone other than Vanessa.”

“Then I wondered, if your morals were really that strong, how could you still flirt with your ex–girlfriend after you had a wife?”

“Honestly, you’re just selfish.”

“You even had to use Aaron as an excuse to reconcile with me.”

“It’s something that can’t be undone; let’s look forward.”

Charles raises his hand to cover his eyes.

I understand his pride.

Seeing him like this doesn’t bring me any satisfaction.

I quietly stand up, leaving this little space for him.

Before I leave, he reaches out and tugs at the hem of my dress.

He grips it tightly, his knuckles white and veins bulging.

He has lost a lot of weight and now has an air of defeat that he can’t seem to hide. I hear his muffled sobs and see his trembling shoulders.

“Don’t come back again,” I say. “Go back to your life, take Aaron with you.”

I pull my dress back and smooth it out. “Oh, I forgot to mention, my new birthday is our divorce anniversary.”

That day is also when I find Doris. She doesn’t know her own birthday, and I wanted to change mine. We decided together that day would be marked as a new beginning for both of us.

“Consider it an early birthday gift from me. Give me some comfort.”

“Charles, thank you.”
