Chapter 228 Marital Strife
Sophia was always pushing Hayden's buttons.
But Hayden wasn't about to let her get away with it. He was ready to grab her and slap her again when Evelyn stepped in just in time. "Alright, hitting her a bit to blow off steam is one thing, but if you really hurt Sophia, people will laugh at you!"
Evelyn's words managed to cool Hayden down.
Seeing Evelyn being reasonable, Hayden decided not to argue with Sophia anymore.
He snorted twice, went home to grab some documents, and left Evelyn and her daughter standing there.
Evelyn wanted to check on Sophia's injuries and take the chance to teach her a lesson, making her understand the situation.
That way, Sophia wouldn't act recklessly.
Otherwise, if they really got kicked out, they'd have nowhere to cry.
Evelyn said, "Alright, stop whining! It's just a fight with your dad. Did you really catch him cheating, or do you have any proof? Don't jump to conclusions! You don't look like a lady from a wealthy family at all! Stop embarrassing me here. Go inside, wash your face, and then I'll..."
Before Evelyn could finish, Sophia pushed her away and snapped back. "Do you really think I'm your daughter? Can't you see I was standing up for you just now? But you turned around and sided with him. Luckily, I caught him today. What if I hadn't? You know, the Brown Villa isn't the only place with beds; Emerald City is full of hotels."
Evelyn, furious, said, "Shut up!"
Sophia's words were like poison.
Evelyn couldn't believe this was the daughter she had raised.
Sophia knew exactly where to hit her where it hurt the most.
Evelyn added, "Do you think I'm not scared of your father finding a mistress? Do you think I'm not worried about some other woman having a kid to compete with us for the inheritance? Emily is already a headache. I don't want any more trouble from another bastard. But can you stop it every time?"
"Why did Isabella end up so miserable? Because she didn't know how to adapt and couldn't manipulate men. Sophia, you have to trust me. If you follow my way, your dad won't kick us out and will treat us like before. This is the only way we can have a good life!"
By now, Evelyn had seen the reality.
She knew Sophia wasn't the same and couldn't win Michael's favor anymore.
The sky over Emerald City was getting darker, and the good times for her and her daughter would eventually end. Their future wealth and life would depend on the Brown family.
But Sophia didn't see it that way.
She had already gained Scarlett's support.
Taking down Emily or dealing with Michael would be a piece of cake.
Only someone like Evelyn, trapped in her own cage, would be so intent on holding onto such a man, with no dignity at all.
In this world, if you didn't use unscrupulous means, you'd always be trampled underfoot.
Sophia clearly remembered that this was something Evelyn had told her.
Evelyn shot back, "Mom, this isn't the life I want. And do you really think that if you treat Dad well, he'll treat you well in return? Why was Michael so easily fooled by me? Why did Emily, who loved him so much and took care of him meticulously, end up with nothing? Have you ever thought about it?"
"And you say Isabella's fate is bad, but do you know that just a few days ago, Dad went to the hospital to see Isabella and even brought her flowers?" As she spoke, Sophia saw Evelyn's face change.
She got excited, curling her lips into a mocking smile. "I hope you don't end up worse than a vegetable. That would be truly embarrassing."
With that, Sophia snorted and went inside.
The door opened and closed with a heavy thud.
Evelyn suddenly felt like a soulless clown, standing there in a daze for a long time.
As Hayden was getting ready to leave with his documents, Evelyn was in the open kitchen sharpening a knife.
After the commotion at the door, the atmosphere in the Brown Villa had dropped to freezing point.
Hayden didn't see the crying and shouting Sophia from earlier. The silence in the living room, combined with the sound of the knife being sharpened, gave him goosebumps.
Evelyn asked, "Are you going out?"
Evelyn's sudden appearance startled Hayden.
He stepped back repeatedly, looking up and down at Evelyn coming from the kitchen. She was holding a knife, with what seemed like tear stains on her cheeks. Hayden couldn't help but tremble as he spoke. "What are you... what are you doing?"
Evelyn tilted her head and responded. "What can I do? I'm cooking. Today is the maid's day off, so it's my turn to cook! Or do you want to punish your daughter by making her go hungry for a day?"
Hearing this, Hayden swallowed again. "Cooking is fine, but be careful with that knife. Why are you waving it around?"
Evelyn repeated coldly. "Are you going out?"
Hayden let out a long sigh and nodded. "Yes, it's not even the end of the workday yet."

His eyes flickered as he carefully considered his words before saying. "I'll be back for dinner later. Save some for me."
Seemingly satisfied with this answer, Evelyn nodded and even managed a smile.
Seeing this, Hayden felt much more at ease. As he put on his shoes at the entrance, he suddenly heard Evelyn ask. "Which hospital is Isabella in?"
Hayden didn't know why Evelyn was asking this.
Maybe it was a whim, or maybe she had another purpose?
But either way, telling her wouldn't hurt, as long as it didn't harm him.
With a sense of urgency, he decided that the best strategy was to leave quickly!
"She should be at the central hospital in Emerald City. I haven't been in touch with Emily for a while, so I'm not sure. Alright, I have to go now. There's a lot of work waiting for me at the company." Making up an excuse, Hayden slipped away. Evelyn, of course, trusted her daughter more, so she knew Hayden was obviously lying.
But she didn't expose him, only feeling resentment towards Isabella.
Resentment towards this woman who, even as a mute vegetable, still blocked her path to wealth and her future, just like twenty years ago.
So she couldn't be blamed for coming up with ways to deal with her.
With this thought, Evelyn sighed in relief.novelbin
She slowly walked back to the kitchen, and the sound of the knife being sharpened once again echoed through the Brown Villa.
