CHAPTER 47

Set To Bait

Lexi and Pittman both spun their heads to look at Kira,

"What is he doing?" Kira thought, a little flustered.

She cleared her throat and said, "I believe niy colleague has covered the major points. It's a mutually beneficial deal that, if it goes well, could open the door for more collaborations in the future. We are happy to address any questions or concerns you may have. If not, I think we're ready to sign the contract today."

"Okay," Liam said. 'Let's sign the contract then.'

"Really?" Lexi blurted out. I mean, that's great."

"Mr Pittman, bring over the contract, Liam gestured with his hand.

'Just like that?' Kira thought.

She was just as stunned as her colleague.

On the way here, Lexi had briefed her on past meetings with Mr Pittman, who seemed to be dragging his feet.

They'd come here prepared for another fruitless chinwag session.

Is this how the president of the fastest-growing entertainment company conducts his business?' Kira wondered. 'Has he actually read the contract?" Liam signed his name with a flourish.

He stood up and extended a hand to Kira, 'I'm looking forward to working with you, Miss Hewitt."

The manager saw the visitors off.

Charles knocked on the door and came into the lounge after the trio left.

"Young Master," he asked with a slight bow, 'didn't you tell us that we would never work with the M Group?

What changed his mind?

Liam wore a rakish smile as he twirled the Montblanc Red between his fingers. 'You need to set up a bait before you go fishing, don't you?"

'Of course,' Charles said, not comprehending.

'The contract's the bait, and that girl... You get it."

"I see."

Young Master was right.

Kira Hewitt could say no to having dinner with a kind stranger she met once on the street.

Could she say no to meeting with the president of the

company she was working with?

When Lexi turned to glance at her for the hundredth time, Kira finally spoke up. 'We're going to end up in the hospital if you don't keep your eyes on the road." "Relax, I can drive with my eyes closed,' Lexi said, then she looked at Kira again.

"I know what you want to ask. To save us the fate of becoming road pizza, I'll give you the answers. No, I don't have any personal relationship with Mr Cane. And no, I'm not the reason why he signed the contract today. Satisfied? Now will you please look at the road and not me?""

I didn't say anything,' Lexi shrugged. "You didn't have to explain yourself. As for your answers...well, let's just say I'm reserving judgement."

Kira shifted in her seat. "Seriously, there's nothing between me and Mr Cane. I've only met him once."

Lexi took advantage of a red traffic light and leaned closer to Kira.

She had the same gossipy look on her face when she chattered with Vanessa and Dan at lunch.

"Just once, eh? Was it love at first sight?'

'No wonder the mysterious president chose today of all days to show up. Did you see the way he looked at you? Of course you did. No girl could miss that look. That passionate, soul-stirring, hungry look that said he wanted to take you right there and then. I felt like such a third wheel. I bet Mr Pittman felt the same way. Dollars to doughnuts, if the two of us weren't in the room, your Mr Cane would've devoured you."

"Hey!" Kira protested. "He wouldn't. And he's not "my Mr Cane"

"What look? Kira thought. I didn't notice any look. I was too busy getting over the shock of seeing him there."

Lexi giggled at her colleague's blushing face. "Oh come on. Don't be shy. You are single, and I bet he's single, too. What's wrong with two single people finding each other attractive? Don't worry, I'm not going to tell anyone.

Kira wanted to bang her head against the window. 'It's not what you think. He helped me catch a thief on the street. I met him just that one time. We're practically strangers."

'Oh,' Lexi looked crestfallen. "I thought I was going to watch an idol drama unfold in real life."

Kira resisted the urge to roll her eyes at her older, supposedly more mature colleague.

'Still, he's obviously interested in you,' Lexi had not given up. 'Why don't you give it a try? If you can hook that insanely hot-not to mention filthy rich-president, you'll be the wealthy Mrs Cane draped in diamonds! Don't forget to invite me to your wedding." Kira slumped lower on her seat and hid her face with the file.

Her colleague didn't need a reply to carry on her daydreaming.

She wondered what Lexi would say if she knew Kira was married to Austyn.

Seven pm

Kira's colleagues insisted on giving her a welcome dinner.

Afterwards, they dragged her to a karaoke lounge.

Kira went along.

She was the new girl.

How could she say no?

It was a good bonding opportunity, anyway.

She got to see the other side of her colleagues.

At the office, they were all dressed professionally and behaved with decorum.

Under the disco lights of the KTV box, coats were shed, ties were loosened, and true colours came out.

Dan was hogging the mic and blaring out a Screaming Chicken rendition of Take Me To Your Heart."

Vanessa waltzed with the microphone stand as her partner.

Curled up in a corner on the sofa, Kira hid a smile behind the glass of lemon tea as she watched her colleagues.

Lexi plonked down next to her, a glass of wine in hand. 'Come on. Why aren't you singing? What's your jam? I'll bump your song to the head of the queue.

Kira shook her head. 'No thanks, I'm good. And I doubt you can snatch that mic from Dan's hands."

'He's not selling any tickets soon, huh? Lexi winked. 'But it's a great way to vent."

'Is he under a lot of stress?"

'Not really. I mean, sure, sometimes there's a tight deadline and he has to burn the midnight oil, but that's only because he never sticks to his own timetable." 'I see."

"Come on, you have to sing. You're the star of the show tonight."
